The only game I completely finished in 2004

I have to say, I really really enjoyed this game. The core mechanic is excellent and the power ups and level progression are just right. Some of the weapons are so satisfying that I had to play levels over and over just to see the effects again.

The guys at work played the survival mode for days, but I got into the normal levels way more.

I really can't say enough about this game. The concept is very simple but the execution is first rate.

If you are any kind of an arcade gamer, you must try this game.

Crimsonland

This is my first review of any game on reflexive, seeing as I couldn't let my favorite Reflexive game go without a proper review.

Graphics.

Crimsonland's graphics can't be just measured by the battlefield alone, as I believe the menus and level-up screen are done very well too. However, the battlefield is definitely where it's at! The main character isn't very well described, and the gun of choice is hard to see as well, but you won't really be looking at your character much, as you will be running for your life, strafing in circles, firing bullets, ion, plasma, and other projectiles, towards hungry, slavering baddies. The monsters, are well enough detailed, but usually have a type, that features color changes depending on toughness. (Many games use this feature, like Alien Shooter for example.) The explosions and bullets of all different types however, my how they are beautiful! Don't let the 2d graphics fool you, 3d doesn't always mean better. 4/5 Stars for graphics, more personality in the main character and monsters would have warranted a 5.

Sound.

The sound in Crimsonland is very well used. The hypnotic fusion of blasting cannons and fast-paced adrenaline rock make for wonderful monster carnage. 4/5.

Gameplay.

This is it. This is why we bought this gem of a game. The pure idea of blowing away monsters has been done before, but to get it right, to make it fun, challenging, and easily repeatable with no loss in replay value? Not so. As you progress through the game, from pistol, to shotgun, to ion cannon, you will earn experience from your kills. These can be used to purchase "perks", which gives the game the flavor of an RPG. Deciding on the right perk at the right time, can save your life, or get you killed. It's your choice, which gives the game a more open feel, as there is no right or wrong way to go. 5/5 for Gameplay.

Overall.

This game is a classic, and should be played by all fans of action games. Try the demo!

Brilliant

Crimsonland is one of those timeless classics that arcade gamers can always relate to one another with.

The gameplay: simple and beautifully executed, you are a lone soldier on empty terrain fending off hordes of monsters. As you kill, you gain "perks", giving you abilities such as regeneration or faster reloading. Weapons are also plentiful, each one having a creative twist on your standard arsenal. My personal favourites were anything Ion, and the Plasma Minigun.

There are 60 quest mode levels, and then the infamous survival mode, as well as Rush. What I found really fun was the Type'o'Kill mode you unlock after finishing quest mode. You can't move or shoot by yourself, instead monsters will come at you with words above their heads, and you have to type the words as fast as you can in order to kill them. Top notch creativity!

Music and sound are very well done in this game, a quiet smooth beat accompanied by massive ammounts of gunfire. The graphics serve their purpose, you won't be looking at anything long enough to wonder "oh look at the lovely detail on that spider".

Crimsonland serves up everything one needs in an action game, as well as providing inspiration for many other games found here on the Reflexive site. Two thumbs up!

Hey everyone. I beat this game on regular and hardcore, and I found these tips useful:

If at first you kill a monster and get a weapon you don't like.. don't pick it up. Wait til it's gone and kill another, you'll get a new choice of weapon.

The BEST perks for any weapon you get, even if your stuck with the little old pistol lol, is
1. Barrel Greaser (most important perk) It kills wayyy faster.
2.Ammo maniac.. it's like an add on for barrel greaser in my opinion.
3.Uranium filled bullets. Makes your bullets more powerful.

The best non weapon power up perks are:
1. Telekinetic! It lets you grab power ups by hovering your mouse over them, even if your far away.
2.Bonus economist. Fire bullets and weapon power up lasts forever!
3.The bonus magnet/perk master perks.

You'll be getting power ups and perks left and right on your screen, and it will be a piece of cake to beat.

Try getting the pulse gun, and using angry reloader. Hold your button on reload, and you'll get infinity powerful sprays of fire going everywhere.

Get the ion cannon, and stationary reloader and stay in the middle. shoot anything that comes near. I use that method a lot!

Never use the freeze perk, and the invinsible perk at the same time. Otherwise they cancel eachother out.

To kill the spawning spiders, use veins or poison, or poison bullets. or even plaugebarror. But make sure you take one spider layer out, otherwise it won't work.

The submachine gun with as many speed and damage increasing perks tends to create a very powerful weapon. The only thing is you need sharpshooter in order to use the submachine gun effectively.

    Blade Gun (Secret Weapon)

Enter Survival Mode. With your first shot, kill an enemy thing. If your first shot doesn't kill it, quit and start all over again. Wherever the bullet impacted the creature, stand on that. It'll be somewhere in the middle of the blood/corpse. Wait until creatures take you below 1/5 of your health, without moving. Without moving, kill all the creatures that were attacking you. If successful, you will receive the Blade Gun immediatley.
