Retro Gaming at it's best.

By now if you have not downloaded this game, you should. At 3 megabytes it's hardly a long wait. First off I'd like to start by saying that this game is not for everybody. At twenty dollars it may seem a tad bit to pay for a slightly shallow game. Which it is. There is not much skill required to play this game. But that's where it's charm comes in. Anybody who has been around long enough to remember the arcade machines will recognize this game as a clone of a few (Their names elude me).

Is this bad? No. On the contrary, retro style games seem to be coming back now. The game is completely controlled with the mouse, which makes it accesible to practically anybody. You control the small asterisk-like ship. Below you is a grid of squares and below that a vast emptiness of space. When the game starts you are spawned into the middle of this grid, and are allowed to move around freely.

Your ship moves fast and at first it is frustrating to try and keep track of it =D Enemies come in the shape of squares, triangles and a myriad of other shapes. They range in color from neon blue to neon red and any other neon's you'd wish for. The ship conveniently shoots for you, freeing you up to move around the map trying to collect the tiny blue orbs that are called stars.

The more stars you collect the better. In Regular mode it takes 25 stars for you to acquire one of the super weapons (which is launched by simply clicking the left mouse button.) These weapons take a while longer to power up in Level Challenge (50 stars rather then 25) but you'll quickly discover the game is near impossible to survive without them.

Though I found the higher level very difficult (Curse you level 40) the lower levels do a very good job of acquainting you with the game mechanics.

All in all, what you really need for this game is a quick eye and even quicker reflexes. It may not be the best game on the market, but it's by far the best retro game out and at 3 megabytes it is a bargain.

Another fantastic installation in an already fantastic series.

For the sake of not having bought it, i cannot fully give this game a 5/5 in every category. Needless to say, It brings out the little nerd who still wishes he was a space Captain. If you're not a fan of this kind of game play, this game probably won't convert you. But, if you're a Space Jockey like myself, with the Holidays coming and boredom setting in, this game came just in time.

Aliens, guns, Spaceships. What more could a man want? If anything, it'll help you kill time as you try to beat the game. Star Defenders 2 was alright, but this proves that no matter what you thought of the second or even first game, There's still a little kick left in the series. More power-ups include the almighty Nuke, One-hit Kill laser, Mines, Swarmer Rockets, Lightning balls and more. The weapon power-ups are nice as well ranging from a single shot laser to a Double, even to triple (with nice effects in between).

The Boss battles are Difficult in a sense that you can easily die if you slack off, The regular enemies themselves are a force to be reckoned with. I myself have died several times. The in Game ranking systems bestow upon you the rank of Junior, Captain and so on as you increase your points upward.

The game play is difficult enough on normal, but when cranked up to Hard the AI takes on a life of it's own, swarming you with lasers until you just want to curl up until it's over. The story follows you as you wage war against the alien Menace, going through 8 missions with around 11 levels each (may vary).

All in all, There isn't much I can say about this game that is bad. Space fighters have a new par to meet as this will certainly raise the standard. My buddy has it on his computer, and I foresee many a day sneaking into his office to play it.

Eh...

Not a bad little game. Keeps you occupied for a bit and is pretty fun. I don't see myself recommending anyone pay 20 dollars for this game, But if you like puzzles it's worth the 2 meg download to try it. Who knows? you may like it enough to buy it.

*Cough* Ahem....

First off, I played this game for ten minutes before I got bored and, a little disgusted, with it. Not to say it's a bad game.... Just with the new Star Defenders 3 out it's not much of a contest between them. Firstoff, You can collect the powerups instead of having only one. A pretty neat idea, except for the fact you have to scrol through them to pick which one you want, and you can't easily tell some of the icons apart from each other.

Second: I admit the powerups are cool, but a bit too powerful. They make the first couple levels I played dreadfully easy and the Armor system made it nearly impossible for anybody good at these shooters to die. Throw in that there isn't an auto-fire sequence and it gets worse from there.

The story line, If there is one, must be as drab as this game. The sounds are a little low- standard and the enemies all kind of look the same after a while. They barely shoot at you, and I found it relatively easy to simply kill them before they ever shot at me, then esay to dodge their lasers when they did.

The weapons on your ship go from 1 shot to to to 3. They must go higher, but it took so long to get a laser powerp, and then I didn't even know I was gettign it because the icon looked exactly the same as ALL the other ones.

I never made it past level 5, or something like that. If a game can't grab your interest from level 1 there isn't much chance that I can play more of it and still be interested.

Sure, I could power myself through the game to give you a full review. But why bother? I'm just going to tell you to go buy Star Defender 3 and not waste your money on this cheap knock-off.
