Excellent space shooter

AstroAvengers is a very well polished game.
It's a top-down vertical scroller with free movement of your ship. You progress through the levels and gain upgrades to your weapons and armor. There are 50 levels, and it's all quite chaotic.

Rendered models and lightmaps really make a difference in this game as you blast your way with explosions so big they shake your screen (really, reslly hard and well done shaking effect). Sound and music is well done also.

Near the end of the game you'll be able to purchase every upgrade so order doesn't really matter. I like the Crusher as my weapon of choice, although the Damager is also quite nice with it's multiple lock-on beam lasers.

I was hoping the end boss would have been more difficult, but I just brought along 100 Nukes before the fight and he went down easy (although I think I used them all).

All in all AstroAvengers delivers an excellent arcade space shooter, and I highly recommend it.

Great shooter, just too short.

Alien Stars is an excellent vertical scrolling space shooter. The gameplay is simple: shoot everything in sight. You are given three different main weapons to choose from, with a unique powerup system. The weapon powerup will float around the screen and change colours every once in a while between red, green, and blue. If you pick one colour, you have to stay with it until your maximum weapon level, otherwise you'll go down to level one of the colour you picked up. So if you choose red, stay with red until you die, to put it simple.

There are twelve missions, each with a unique scrolling background. You'll fight over planets, nebulae, and in one case, through a labyrinth made of asteroids. I find the game was pretty short, I beat most of it in one sitting. Three of the missions near the end are quite challenging, so that may extend the length for some, but I just wish it was longer. Thankfully, the developers made it pretty obvious there would be a sequel, thanks to the ending quotes.

The sounds and graphics are well polished. Fans of the Star Defender series will recognize some of the enemies, as well as the explosions and sounds. There is a good deal of new content as well, however this game feels like a scrolling version of Star Defender. Which is not a bad thing, by any means.

All in all, Alien Stars is an excellent shooter worthy of a place in any shooter fan's collection.

Brilliant

Crimsonland is one of those timeless classics that arcade gamers can always relate to one another with.

The gameplay: simple and beautifully executed, you are a lone soldier on empty terrain fending off hordes of monsters. As you kill, you gain "perks", giving you abilities such as regeneration or faster reloading. Weapons are also plentiful, each one having a creative twist on your standard arsenal. My personal favourites were anything Ion, and the Plasma Minigun.

There are 60 quest mode levels, and then the infamous survival mode, as well as Rush. What I found really fun was the Type'o'Kill mode you unlock after finishing quest mode. You can't move or shoot by yourself, instead monsters will come at you with words above their heads, and you have to type the words as fast as you can in order to kill them. Top notch creativity!

Music and sound are very well done in this game, a quiet smooth beat accompanied by massive ammounts of gunfire. The graphics serve their purpose, you won't be looking at anything long enough to wonder "oh look at the lovely detail on that spider".

Crimsonland serves up everything one needs in an action game, as well as providing inspiration for many other games found here on the Reflexive site. Two thumbs up!

Well Done Shooter

Star Defender 2 is an excellent Galaga style shooter.

Your task is simply to fend off wave after wave of enemies. You can't move from the bottom of the screen, so you have to dodge left/right in order to stay alive.

Enemy attack patterns are quite randomized, so you won't always know what to expect. Power-ups drop from enemies as you destroy them, such as weapon upgrades or shields.

When you take a hit, your weapon downgrades by one level. If you only have a level one weapon and you are hit, you die. There are plenty of upgrades and the weapons get quite powerful later on.

There are nine "missions", each consisting of 10-15 levels including a boss fight. Bosses are well done in this game, having separate destroyable parts.

Star Defender 2 can be quite challenging at some points, and quite easy at others, regardless of difficulty setting.

All in all it's a well thought out and executed game, and should be a staple in any space shooter fan's collection.

A Mediocre Third Person Shooter

The graphics are beautiful. The action is intense and unforgiving. The music is furious and sets the mood perfectly.

So what's wrong with this game? Simply put, it's bland and repetitive. You are a soldier sent to save your planet, and you do so by completing missions. Every mission in the game except for four near the end requires you to:

a) shoot your way to Point A
b) destroy a structure, pick up an item, or step on a red circle
c) either repeat steps a and b until mission is fulfilled or return to your ship

Occasionally you'll need to collect a key in order to access an area, mainly ones with a yellow force field, since the rest can be destroyed with an upgraded Photon Cannon.

Playing this game, I constantly found myself asking "when will it end?". The plot is mediocre, and most of the missions are random and useless. There is little diversity in the enemies, and only four weapons to choose from. You can fall asleep and spin your mouse in circles and you can win at this game. If there was more to it, such as evolving enemies or missions that required a strategy to complete, this would have been a far more interesting game.

CGS Software had good ideas while creating this game, they knew how to a make fast and furious action environment, but lack of depth brought the game down. If you are a fan of an onslaught of meaningless explosions and pretty lights, then this game is for you. Otherwise, save your money or wait for a sequel in which I hope CGS Software will rectify it's mistakes.
