A great game...if you've got some time on your hands.
In my humble opinion Swarm Gold is just as, if not more, addictive than its predecessor. The game itself is much smoother and ship handling has been improved. Movement in general just seems more fluid. The dialogue is a lot more catchy and really draws you into the game. For fans of games in this genre, you won't want to stop once you've started. And that's where the only problem I can find with this game comes in...there is no Save Game option. So if you have to quit on the 99th level, you lose all your extra lives and ammunition. That's the only reason I wouldn't give Swarm Gold a 5/5 rating...other than that, it's an excellent game. |

More Good Than Bad
Die hard enthusiasts of the previous Tradewinds versions may be a little put off by this most recent incarnation. Still, once you've played the game for a while, you'll realize that Tradewinds Caravans has stayed true to its roots in terms of trading and exploration. The biggest difference is that it's land based, as opposed to sea faring, and there are both good points and bad points to this.
Graphics: For a small game, the graphics are quite good, especially in some of the eastern cities. The detail is excellent and still loads very quickly.
Sound: Some of the sounds, like the battles and marketplaces, can get very tiring if you're playing for a while, but the music is lovely. The eastern/arabic slant is refreshing.
Gameplay: This is where things really get interesting. The basics of trading and completing tasks are still there. The difference is that you must follow strict routes and can’t by-pass a particular city in favor of another along the route. Once you have moved from one city to the other, you can choose the accelerated mode to repeat the journey, but you won’t be able to avoid bad guys or pick up extra goodies along the way...and taking the long route is very slow. The battles themselves are fairly easy to win, once you use a bit of strategy and have a well balanced ‘army’ set up…and you’ve unlocked the special abilities. Trading is a bit more complex since not all the cities in a particular region carry the same things.
Overall: Tradewinds Caravans is a bit more challenging than its predecessors. Having played as each of the six available characters, I can say that a lot depends on which character you choose. Still, having six separate storylines gives you a lot more play time. It may be that much different from the other Tradewinds versions, but it can be just as addicting. Definitely one for your collection. |
