Classic Old School

Ever played Defender? If you have you know the general premise of Guardian. You fly back and forth blasting down aliens and protecting your people from being abducted while the stunning backdrops and rocking music rush by in the background.

Guardian builds on the Defender theme with things like invasions, where you are supporting ground troops as they attack the aliens (a nice change from trying save them all the time though you still have to be careful not to blast through your own men).

The weapons are very cool with lasers and missiles providing some extra umph to your arsenal. I also thought the graphics were really sharp with fantastic explosions made even better by good sound effects and an excellent music score.

One last thought by way of suggestion. The game starts you out with keyboard controls, but I found the mouse to be much easier. I strongly recommend going into options and changing to mouse controls before you start your first game!

For anyone looking for a game that plays like an old-school classic, but looks as good as anything available today, you should definitely check Guardian out.

Good Game

I've been surprised by some of the reviews of this game and have to say I've had a very different experience than most.

I really enjoyed Cave Days because it is a bit harder and more diverse than most of the platform games available on Reflexive. Instead of just wandering around collecting items and then going to the exit over and over again, Cave Days mixes things up with foot races, puzzles, items and of course clubbing!

The cut scenes I found to be hilarious as were some of the animations, like when you drop down a long shaft and splat at the bottom.

The only negative I ran into is that the game becomes rather difficult. There are branching paths, which gives you the ability to avoid some of the more difficult challenges for awhile, but it's more fun to master them...it just takes a good amount of skill.

Cave Days is a really enjoyable platformer (think the original Mario) with lots of variety and fun. Just don't expect to appreciate it all in the first 15 minutes. 60 minutes probably isn't enough time to realize how much fun can be had in the game :).

Old-School Fighter

This is definitely an old-school fighter that will bring back memories of such button mashing greats as Final Fight and Ninja Combat. The game isn't quite up to those standards, but the variety of characters and ability to play 2 player co-op make for a good bit of fun that fighter fans should really enjoy, once you get the hang of the fighting.

A word of caution on the difficulty. ROM 2 is tough. There are a variety of combos that you can use, and you'll need to figure them out in order to really succeed. Getting a feel for each fighter is necessary to progression, but it also gives the game a lot of variety. Unlockable characters give you a good reason to keep playing deeper into the game, as does the fun arena mode. The story is pretty 'meh,' but the action is intense and that is what really matters.

Not for everyone, but for anyone who really digs fighting games, I'd recommend giving it a try.

Not Quite Turbo...

The game play in Turbo Gems is something of a mix between Klax and Columns. You make matches of 3 or more by rotating the colors on the falling column. After any block disappears, the blocks above it will fall, which can create combos.

Turbo Gems is alright (I prefer the similar Zero Count ;), but but the game play seems slow. Each piece starts out partially off-screen, and it feels like a long wait for the piece to come far enough on screen for you to use it. (this problem is only compounded by the way the left-mouse button drops the piece to the bottom of the screen) There isn't any real quest other than the quest to get more trophies and unlock additional modes, and despite the nice variety of power-ups the game doesn't have enough substance to make it carry my interest for long periods of times. For a quick game here or there it works pretty well.

One of a kind

Depths of Peril is pretty amazing. It is an action RPG game mixed with the politics of Civilization. After first running into the computer controlled characters it is amazing to think that they are computer AI. It feels like you are playing in a huge world against human players.

Unlike most games, the goal here isn't to kill the computer, it is to out compete the computer. As you often are working on the same goals at the same time, it is a very odd feeling as you realize the computer is racing to save the princess before you do. That unique feel permeates the game, and this is a very good one that no review could begin to cover.

Easy to recommend setting aside a full 2 hours to play through the wonderfully lengthy trial time, there's no question you'll be hooked!
