A reason to match 3!

With a battery of "match-3" puzzles to be found, it took me awhile to actually look at this game let alone play it. I never could get into the mind-numbing match-3. They all seemed pointless and endless not to mention repetitive.

Puzzle Hero was not one of these. To my surprise - there was a REASON for matching 3. The story is simple: Save your brother Tristan, who has been kidnapped (not sure why) from sorcerer Zalock’s spell and his Army of Darkness. You would read a piece of the story, which is shown on a very nice map (imo) and then embark on your quest. Each quest comprises of combating a series of monsters and finishing up with a boss Mob. Then another piece of the story is revealed. In between these fights you have the option of visiting a store where you can buy armor and weapons. There is, as well, a (not needed) salon for changing hairstyle and skin tone.

The combat is where the game shines when the author made use of the classical Match-3. Ideally, during combat you, want to match 3 swords as that is the only way damage to your foe (but having the right weapon and matching special items can do some devastating damage as well). There are other items: potions, weraths, bull’s shields and other specials. All the while the mobs are doing the same thing to you.

The graphics are phenomenal and very fluid. A couple things didn’t set well with me, although purely aesthetic, you can only be a female hero. As far as the mobs, you fight the same dozen or so mobs over and over, sometimes they are dressed up differently, but in the end they are the same. The A.I. in the game wasn't too bad. Sometimes was a little frustrating because I'm not that good at looking ahead for those killer 4 match-up-free-turn moves. Maybe he's cheating.

I thought this game was wonderful. Never once did I see the "match-3" theme as a boring puzzle, but more so as a way to fight off the mobs. So if you despise all the match-3 games out there - try this one. You won't be di

SNF Games are just lame!

Why? Because most you just search for objects - just because. Find them in not so "realistic" places. and sometimes there is really no reason to search for the objects, other than, "its because the game says so..". Lets face it, SNF games are just a bunch of "themed" images, with weak stories. Some do a pretty good job of making you interact with the objects to give you that sense of accomplishment, but overall, it is nothing more that a "hidden" object game.

Well I thought I would try one more time - the graphics looked good in this one (like some of the later games to reflexive). And this one is completely different!! there is a REASON for looking for objects. and most importantly - they are where you would probably look (in real life). Not in some weird place. That is one aspect of SNF games I hated. Objects not only in weird spots, but WHY ARE THEY THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE!! Everything you see in this game is what would most likely be there if YOU were there. Which made finding them all the more difficult! I love the fact that each object was used "interactively" with the story. They gave you a sense of accomplishment, and progress. It also made you feel part of the story. Even the puzzles matched the game theme, not something random. The music is subtle. Adds flavor to the story while you play, but while repetitious, its not annoying at all. Works well.

If you dislike SNF games. I would encourage you to give this one a shot. Its really not bad. And I cant stand any of them. This one feels like a true interactive fiction. Where your actions make a difference. would like to see more from this author. Now I have to buy it..

Virtual Villagers type game with better graphics

Only 20min in the game and it plays much like the virtual villagers - except without the Nintendo graphics. Beautifully rendered graphics, makes it much more of an attention holder. Most if not all of the features in the VV style games can be found here. While I do not think this will knock anyone over, it is to me a refreshing change (graphic wise) for game play. Music nice, doesn't seem to overpower the game, the voice overs can be (sometimes) a little awkward, (they are not REALLY annoying - just think maybe a little "cooing" would have better fit the theme). My opinion is give it a shot. If you like the VV type games you'll love this one. Although still checking, it seems they do not carry on their activities while the screen is minimized. this could be a bad thing, since building is very slow.
Another thing to note, that UNLIKE VV's, these guys do not operate on their own. when they're hungry, you have to move them there, when they are bored, or sleepy, you have to constantly move them to the designated spot. Not sure this sits well either.

Mahjongg and Crime - Its A Mystery

I love to see a company break the mold and mix two completely different genre's into one - and make it work. M:IUS did this seamlessly!

The objective is simple: You are to take out the kingpin of crime. However, as a "refresher" you are given a series of "cases" to get you familiar with the game play. Just about everything you find in police work (and movies CSI etc.) is found in the game. To find your evidence, the game makes an excellent use of Mahjongg. Upon arriving at the said location, there will already be suspects in custody. The right one is what you conclude from your "Mahjongg clues". Each tile is depicted with things to help you in your case (cuffs, prints, alibi's etc.), and some that have nothing to do with it (soda cans, cars, newspapers etc.). Pair up the right ones, and you'll be given information about the suspects that are in custody. The TYPE of information you get, depends on the TYPE of tile you match. Example, finger prints are more detailed info. You have access to an interrogation room, where careful play there (a memory game) could get the suspect to confess if they are guilty.
The game was phenomenal overall. Not ONCE did it ever feel like your playing Mahjonng. Those tiles were simply pieces of evidence you were sifting through to get to the useful pieces of information. The sound was interesting enough. It was like a police scanner running at all times. I thought it added to the ambiance of the game. Graphics were nice and consistently done throughout the game. There was so much stuff going on in this game, that the hour demo flew by! Not to mention there are other aspects of the crime solving tools that are not listed here. This is a highly recommended game for those that only "mildly" like Mahjonng and mystery type games. I really felt this game did a good job immersing the player into the crime solving world (probably why the hour went by so quick).

Tetris with a twist

I did not play the first one, as it did not look like something I would play. This one on the other hand had something appeal to me - was hoping it was not another match 3 (other than a cradle of Rome style)
I am surprised no one has rated this yet. Its actually quite ingenious. Think of it as tetris with a twist. On the board are elves that have fallen asleep. your job (for each level) is to clear the board of all the sleeping elves, to do this, you lay down the tetris type pieces in a manner that not only covers the sleeping elves, but at the same time all the pieces laid need to touch two energy nodes, which when connected will eliminate the blocks and waking the elves (thus removing them from the board).

As you gain levels, so does the number of "sleeping elves" on the board, but so does the complexity of their locations - and to make it more challenging there are also pre-existing pieces already laid that you have to contend with.

Movement is like tetris, right click to rotate, then left click it in place.

this game turned out WAY better than I expected but I can see this might be one of those very hard games. as after the 3rd level i was already failing.

Music is excellent and the graphics are breath-taking - there is a real fantasy feel to the game - storyline is a little weird, but hey, its a fantasy LOL. If you are a tetris pro - buy this, if not - definitely try the demo. I might have to download the 1st one seeing as I might have misjudged it (hope it is the same style) Also - make sure you have a lot of spare time - it has a strange way of sucking you in.
