going nutso over mr. smoozles
Having been addicted to Dash/Time Management games which Reflexive consistently labels Action/Sim, I was surprised when the first few scenes were finally presented to me. Needless to say, I "died" about three times before finally figuring out what to do with the first scene ^^;
Then it hit me: I should play this as an RPG game, wherein you talk to stationary characters, get on sidequests, and, most importantly, think fast! An avid RPG gamer myself, I spent nearly 18 hours straight finishing this game, and when the end credits rolled, I was very much satisfied.
Not only does it have interesting gameplay and storyline, it pokes fun at other games as well. And the dialogues were amusing, to say the least. I found myself chuckling at various points during the game.
There were a few things I didn't like, though:
| the other reviewers were right - Ed's pace was slow.
|
| unlike some games, this doesn't proceed in a strictly linear fashion. sidequests can overlap, and you have to think which objective will have which end, and which must come first. in short, you will need some mind work and not robotic mouse (or keyboard) pressing.
|
| because of the 2D graphics, there might be some confusion as to what lane leads to where.
|
For those who are used to time management games where the pace is almost always fast and the objectives are clear-cut, I advise you to skip this game.
But for those who want a bit of variety and enjoy long, drawn-out playing, Mr. Smoozles Goes Nutso is for you! |

Nice enough...
but no Garden Defense.
I first thought that, after the cliffhanger at the end of Garden Defense, this was its much-awaited sequel. I was wrong. But this does not automatically mean that this game fails - After all, I did enjoy it, so much so that I am contemplating on buying the full version of the game.
It doesn't seem addictive at face value, but after a couple of levels you can't help but click "Next level" over and over, and before you know it, the trial hour is up.
Pros: The humor, and the dynamic gameplay. No, you won't survive a horde of zombies by using the same strategy over and over again. You are forced to innovate. The music is also nice, and the difficulty level does increase as you go on.
Con: Garden Defense's plants are more flexible, in the sense that even if the enemies are behind the plant's back they can still fire away. The plants here are pretty straightforward, as in: "You're in the direct line of my vision, therefore I shall shoot you." But that's all.
Overall, I would say Plants vs Zombies is a fresh take on the Tower Defense theme, but it doesn't take the cake. |
