Back to basics

I grew up with point and click adventure game, and this game is certainly pretty high in quality. The plot is amusing and hints of references to other games are here and there. I finished it already (with a help from a walkthrough,) I must say it's both great fun and pretty funny.

Retro pixelated graphics might not be a cup of tea for others, but I think they pulled it out very well. It does feel retro, and it is pretty pleasant to look at. I say it's decent if you like old-fashioned games. This review on the graphics maybe a little biased, because I do like retro style.

I can't rememer so much about the sound effects and music, though the speeches were a little time-consuming. To process you mostly have to try saying every available lines which took time, but you can always click to skip them. But be careful, all conversations tell you what you have to do.

The gameplay was well-done and not too easy. Like all point and click adventures, you pick up useful items and use them later. I could say it's a bit difficult to find out what to do, but once you know your task, it's fun to complete it. Some of the items looked almost like a part of the background, so you need to click everything that has a title when you hover your mouse on it. Most of the time that I got stuck, it was because I have not tried all the available dialogues on certain characters. This is the hard part, because we don't know when a new dialogue will be available.

Overall, I think point-and-click adventure game fans will be pleased. Reflexive needs more entertaining and amusing adventure games like this that aren't like normal RPG quest games.

Monkey Island, but nowhere near as good

This game is a direct rip on the Monkey Island series (complete with pirate bar). Even the hero's name, Tombrandt Driftwood, is a reference to Monkey Island's Guybrush Threepwood. The humour is nowhere near as sharp as Monkey Island, and some of the gratuitous background action is frustratingly time consuming when you're just trying to get on with the plot. But, it's charming enough in its own right, and a pleasant diversion for people who enjoy point and click games.

Great game!

Finally a change from all the Bejewelled clones and missing item games, this one's a blast from the past. Heavily inspired by the old Monkey Island games (*cough* ripped off sprites *cough*), it has some nice puzzles and humour reministent of the MI classic. This is a must-have for all classic Lucasarts and MI fans. Two thumbs up!
