Old-School Fighter

This is definitely an old-school fighter that will bring back memories of such button mashing greats as Final Fight and Ninja Combat. The game isn't quite up to those standards, but the variety of characters and ability to play 2 player co-op make for a good bit of fun that fighter fans should really enjoy, once you get the hang of the fighting.

A word of caution on the difficulty. ROM 2 is tough. There are a variety of combos that you can use, and you'll need to figure them out in order to really succeed. Getting a feel for each fighter is necessary to progression, but it also gives the game a lot of variety. Unlockable characters give you a good reason to keep playing deeper into the game, as does the fun arena mode. The story is pretty 'meh,' but the action is intense and that is what really matters.

Not for everyone, but for anyone who really digs fighting games, I'd recommend giving it a try.

A valiant and passionate effort!!

There have been very few attempts over the years at creating a good beat'em'up on the PC, and while you can download and play all the fantastic Capcom ROMs, they have years of experience in the biz. Independent beat'em'ups are few and far between, Newgrounds being the biggest lab churning out these types of games in Flash.

If someone's going to step up and try to make a PC Beat'em'up in the raw, it's probably going to be somebody who's passionate about it with 0$. Programming a beat'em'up is no easy task: the more you add stuff, the greater the risk of something going wrong. The programmer(s) of this game wanted it all, and it shows, as the in-game Japanese style story scripting is quite cool.

Yes, you will eat severe pummellings all of a sudden, partly due to the fact that blocking requires a neutral position. Button mashing beat'em'up players will get cleaned up by this game in a matter of seconds, especially if you don't exploit diagonnal running, which is available for one of the first times ever. Those who like to get their hands dirty and are technical fighters, will be rewarded.

If you consider the monumental flops we've been seeing on all console platforms, this game actually has done a fine job. It offers unlimited juggles and allows for creative freedom. It's all nicely been programmed for you, just stay out of the way when the enemy strikes.

You can total an enemy almost completely on your first attack, and they can take a good chunk out of you if you're not careful. This was part of the fun for me, just sending people flying and then taking them out. If you don't go about it in a systematic way, if you don't protect your NPCs, the game will own you, and you will hate it well under the 60 minute mark.

Quirks have also been included, such as the fact that the enemy can eat the food if you can't get to it first.. sure beats a dissolving chicken! Oh, and please, go fullscreen (ALT-ENTER), 320x200, just like mom used to make.
