Retro Gaming at it's best.

By now if you have not downloaded this game, you should. At 3 megabytes it's hardly a long wait. First off I'd like to start by saying that this game is not for everybody. At twenty dollars it may seem a tad bit to pay for a slightly shallow game. Which it is. There is not much skill required to play this game. But that's where it's charm comes in. Anybody who has been around long enough to remember the arcade machines will recognize this game as a clone of a few (Their names elude me).

Is this bad? No. On the contrary, retro style games seem to be coming back now. The game is completely controlled with the mouse, which makes it accesible to practically anybody. You control the small asterisk-like ship. Below you is a grid of squares and below that a vast emptiness of space. When the game starts you are spawned into the middle of this grid, and are allowed to move around freely.

Your ship moves fast and at first it is frustrating to try and keep track of it =D Enemies come in the shape of squares, triangles and a myriad of other shapes. They range in color from neon blue to neon red and any other neon's you'd wish for. The ship conveniently shoots for you, freeing you up to move around the map trying to collect the tiny blue orbs that are called stars.

The more stars you collect the better. In Regular mode it takes 25 stars for you to acquire one of the super weapons (which is launched by simply clicking the left mouse button.) These weapons take a while longer to power up in Level Challenge (50 stars rather then 25) but you'll quickly discover the game is near impossible to survive without them.

Though I found the higher level very difficult (Curse you level 40) the lower levels do a very good job of acquainting you with the game mechanics.

All in all, what you really need for this game is a quick eye and even quicker reflexes. It may not be the best game on the market, but it's by far the best retro game out and at 3 megabytes it is a bargain.

One Arcade Game To Rule Them All

Neon Wars is unbelievably fun to play. Not only is it a brilliant game in many different ways, but I was unaware until now that arcade games could be this awesome. Little did the programmers of Neon Wars know that they would become the first to make fireworks into a game! A fair warning, however--this game is not for the faint of heart. I doubt an epileptic could even glance at the game without having a seizure. I feel that it would do this game an injustice to classify it so narrowly as an arcade game, for the creativity with which it was made clearly defines it as a new genre in its own right. You feel like the captain of a ship whose gunner is Luke Skywalker or Han Solo, and all you have to do is fly around and enjoy the ride, while the gunner does all the hard work. Grabbing the floating blue stars, which are gravitationally attracted to your ship, gives you the very-necessary power ups that, for the most part, clear the screen of enemies just as you're about to be overrun. The excitement of it all is captivating; I simply couldn't stop playing the DEMO! This is definitely one of the games on my wish list. There may be another game out there that contains more creativity, beauty, and originality than Neon Wars, but I am not yet aware of such a game. This game, really, only has two flaws, and they can be ceremoniously ignored given the game-crafting skill involved here. The music was very similar to the techno-easy-listening that sounded great but was a bit too soft, and didn't quite match the game's energy level. Also, the crazy exploding stars in the background on the title screen were a bit much. I could hardly see which button to click to play the game without contracting a chronic eye disorder. Other than these two minor details, the game is perfect, and already is a classic in my book.

Neon Wars

Wow!

Anyone remember 'vector graphics?' Asteroids is the prime example. Neon Wars uses the concept of vector graphics (or neon tubes, hence the name) and adds the following ingredients:

  • six cups of pure plasma energy
  • ten pounds of vibrant color
  • one volatile bag of glowing neon gas
  • a truckload of sound effects
  • a big dash of frenetic action
  • and a control system that is superb

This recipe of light, sound, and action is for those that can master keeping track of many objects on screen - all moving about and in general tracking you down.

It is simply an amazing game. Fast paced and colorful it is tough to put this one down. You control, well, something that represents you. You are placed in a rectangluar arena and are asked to keep alive by moving about destroying enemy thingme's in the process. There are four primary things to focus on:

    1. collecting floating stars which will continue to power-up your weapons
    2. avoiding collisions with opponents
    3. using your "smart bomb" weapons at just the right time
    4. never taking your eye off the screen

The controls are simple and mouse (or joypad) driven. You control two aspects of the game; your movement in the arena and when you use a smart bomb. Shooting is done automatically for you. Bizarre as that sounds, I couldn't imagine trying to shoot one one direction while moving in another using a mouse and keyboard. Your hands are full in navigating around that arena positioning yourself in the best place to shoot down opponents or capture that last star to give you a power boost.

And oh! the smart bombs. Ten extremely effects-laden smart bombs that destroy enemies in ten lovely ways.

What a blast! This game is a great diversion for when you need a twitchy finger session to work off a bad (or good) day... Very nice job and even nicer so for an indy title.
