Tower Defense on a whole new level

I thought I had seen it all when it came to the Tower Defense genre. How wrong I was. I downloaded this game and was expecting a typical wave-after-wave style game with clichéd towers. Instead, I found a game that is probably as much a beautiful work of art as it is a great game!

Following a storyline and guided by the "Great Aa", you are slowly introduced to the various aspects of the game, which provides not only a great introduction to those as yet unfamiliar to this genre, but a thotough explanation of the differences this game has to offer to those who already play this style of game.

The aim of this game is not difficult, but at times, it can be entertainingly frustrating: Monsters follow a set path from start to finish, and the player's goal is to eliminate the monsters before they do by placing the so-called "towers". In this game, however, no longer are there the typical "air" and "ground" type towers, nor are there elements or other such variables.

The gameplay is much more freeform, with no grid-like places in which you are forced to position your towers. And the towers ("points") are unique. There are of course, the typical "slow-down" and "boost-attack" towers, but so too are there mine spreading towers, towers which become more powerful as they kill more. Some take advantage of the game's unique curving paths. And even more unique is the fact that the mouse cursor itself can damage the enemies.

Each level is completed not based on the number of waves, but based on time, meaning you must endure the attacks for long enough to reach the next stage. The currency for the purchase of towers ("cache") is carried on to the next stage, meaning you need to plan ahead.

All in all, I think this is a great game. While the graphics and sound may not the the top notch latest in 3D eye candy, it certainly has a distinct feel to it that very much matches the ethereal nature of the game itself, and in any case, the gameplay more than makes up for it!

A Tower Defense Experience

If there are games where screenshots simply doesn't do it justice, this is definitely one of them. While it is true that the graphic is not the top of the line in today's standards, this is an awesome Tower Defense style game that is too good to pass up.

The concept of this game is simple; build towers and shoot the enemies. What makes this game stand out is how different each of the 11 towers are. From towers that lays mines in a circular pattern, to towers that shoots only on a strait path, you must decide which tower is best for each stage.

If that is not enough, each enemies also comes with unique properties. From those that attracts ammo, to those that repels it, you now have a tower defense where each stage is a new experience. Combine that with 100 different stages and 10 difficulty levels... Well I guess I let you do the math on this one.

This game also have something that other tower defense usually don't; a well written storyline. Although I will not spoil it too much for you, it allows you to experience immortality first hand. As the story unfolds, you will actually care enough to read the dialogs, or maybe even play a stage just to see what happens next. The music also fits well with the mood of this game.

Overall, This is definitely a game worth checking out. But don't take my word for it, grab the demo and see for yourself.

I cannot reccomend this game enough

Of all the casual games I have ever played, this is the one I keep coming back to, over and over again. The premise, like all other tower defense games, is that you have a group of enemies traveling along a line and you have to set up towers to destroy them. What sets this game apart from all the others is its depth, both in story and conception.

As the game begins, you have volunteered to leave your wife and newborn child behind to defend your world as a 'pathspace defender' a dimension above hyperspace, which explains why the creeps follow a particular line as opposed to traveling randomly (a small thing, but this and other aspects really lend a sense of thought and care into the 'whys' behind the game). The towers are introduced similarly, as different elements of your character being reappropriated in the defense of your home.

The story twists and turns, and by the time you finish the final 96th level, you'll be completely sucked in. As Patrick Dugan of JayisGames says: ""I love you grandpa" is a piece of text that haunted me, leaving me shaken with wonder and existential horror, for hours after I finished the game."

The graphics are great as well... perfect for the sci-fi theme, as is the musical score (although it can get a little repetitive after a while). As for replayability, each level has 10 difficulty settings, and even going a level up or down has very profound changes in how you play the game. So yes... 960 levels in all when you include those... its no wonder I keep coming back.

Tips & Tricks for 'Immortal Defense':

  • You don't need to click anything in order to fire at enemies, simply moving the mouse next to them causes it to automatically fire at them. You can use the right mouse button to use a charge attack, too.

  • Using Points (towers) is necessary to your success. To place down a helper Point, hold down the mouse button for a second, and then release. You can upgrade it the same way. Sometimes one upgraded Point is superior to many non-upgraded Points.

  • You can replay earlier levels in a campaign to increase the money you have to buy and upgrade Points in later levels. So if you're stuck, replay older levels and try to get a higher score, it'll help you later on.

  • To defeat the first boss, Brother Bavakh, use the mouse cursor's charge attack to direct the attacks of the Limited Point towards the Brother Bavahk.

  • To defeat the Panopticon, either clear its shields through

rapid-firing Points, or don't hit at at all and just wait for the time to run out (its shields will slow it down and it won't make it to the exit in time), or use the Circuit Points to get through its shields.

How to outright CHEAT in Immortal Defense:
Hold down Control, and hold down the Numpad 2 for a trickle of more and more Cache!
Hold down Control, and tap Numpad 3 for 9 of each turret!
If these don't work for you, make sure you're using the NUMPAD version of the numbers, not the ones along the top of your keyboard!
