Not just a cooking game

Hell's Kitchen is not just a cooking game, nor it is a dash-type game. It's based off of the show with the same title. You battle the heat of both the kitchen and the diningroom to keep your boss from yelling at you. Higher the fire goes, the less chance you have to succeed, and when you do succeed, he doesn't give you a good review. You can only do one of the ingredients at a time because of the fact that you are only one person. You only have two arms which can only deal with one ingredient at a time. The game is supposed to be more realistic than the other cooking/dash type games, since it is a game of a tv show about a real restraunt, with real people. I had a great time with it. You don't have to do much in the diningroom, just cleaning up tables, taking orders. I liked the fact that all you had to do was click on the meal in order for it to be sent to who it needed to be sent to, which was great due to my short memory. I also liked that it used the guy's real voice (or someone who sounded alot like him). It was fun, realistic, and I loved the additions of the recipies that you can make at home. I may try some. Overall, it was a great game. I needed the challenge.

All bark but no bite

I am a fan of Kitchen Nightmare, and sometimes Hell's Kitchen. But that doesn't mean I will enjoy this game so I downloaded the demo, hoping it will be a genuinely good cooking game. What I have is Gordon Ramsay looking at me with a stern face and sometimes sprouting some words which is almost a compliment but at most time ready to scream like he did for real in the show. I expected cooking, dicing, etc but what I had was a time management game. Nothing more. The cooking is boring with the ingredients going in circles really fast and all you have to do is sit the customers, get their orders, pour the bowl whilst looking at the timer, serve the customer, send the bill and clean up. At all times you have Chef Ramsay giving comments.

Boring is my verdict because in the end it is just mindless clicking with a some maths involved. You also get some recipes which you can print which means Chef Ramsay most certainly endorsed this game. Why do I feel like this game is a mirror of the real man; all bark but frankly not much bite?

I want cooking. I want dicing, chopping, etc. It would be better if I can manage a group of chefs to complete task. What I have is a poor man's Diner Dash and the likes.

HEAVEN, AND A BIT OF HELL.

Oh no you didn't! Hell's Kitchen waltzes into the dining room in an attempt to smack Flo out of the biz. But beyond the strong franchise, is it really worth playing?

The focus is on graphics, and Gordon's mouth. At first glance, the game appears to be of a daunting complexity, showing detailed and printable recipes to send you on a culinary excursion. You'll quickly find out that a lot of elemts of this game go to waste, as the experience itself, is very bland. Go-Go Gourmet, while more childish looking, was a more accurate cooking experience.

There's not much actual "cooking" going on, just timing the autonomous pots and pans right so that the food gets to the dining room as freshly as possible. However, when the meal makes it to the dining room itself, there's no longer a rush, as the clients' satisfaction seem second to Gordon Ramsay's.

It's hard to determine which is the "side-game" and which is the "main-game". The waiting of the tables is highly ineffective, and it is often difficult to QUICKLY determine at exactly which phase of their meals your patrons are at -- you just keep preparing stuff until everybody's out of the restaurant.

Hell's Kitchen sure brought on the heat in terms of graphics, but that would only be in contrast to the more cartoon-y style of artwork that we're used to seeing in the Diner Dash type games. However, if you're gonna wear the gloves -- then wear the boots. Sure, it's got wonderfully rendered graphics, but the clientelle doesn't fit the bill and move like early 90's renderings and, while very smooth, move like robots. If there's a Chandelier on the ceiling, you don't walk in with a green t-shirt and jeans, and if you're near far-sighted, wear glasses.. that woman has her face so far in the menu.

It altogether feels promising and faithful as a franchise, but definitely not consistent or polished as a casual game.

Tips & Tricks for 'Hell's Kitchen':

I haven't quite mastered it, but hopefully someone else can. Unfortunately, with this game, there is no numbering of tables, so you really have to pay attention to the order of customers. For example, for the main course you know who came in first, second etc. and you serve them according to the time they came in, but once you enter the next course, you become all flustered. So, learn the seating arrangements according to the time they come in. It should be a smooth cycle.

Another very important tip is, try not to do 2 things together, especially taking an order, because the first order might be large and all that time, not only are the people who ordered the large order waiting, but also the people whose order you picked right after that at nearly the same time. So, for example, by the time you finish prepare the first order, the first customers are mad and also the second, and you still have to go and complete their order! So, by the time you complete it, they would have driven up the customer dissatisfaction flaming blade thingy way up. So, try to avoid picking up orders together.

Another thing to take note of is try to determine who was waiting longest. So, if you are presented with 2 tables ready to order, one might have a slight flame, so take that order first and come back to the other one perhaps in between adding ingredients and cooking. That way, they may not be very angry when you do complete their order, making them easier to appease (because with some orders, you just can't get a five - because the final ingredients for 2 pots are the same and they both have the same cooking time...what are you gonna do?) So, be prepared in case you have to settle for a three-star meal. In the end, what matters is that you had a five-star day. So Good Luck, I hope these tips come in handy.

Always keep your ingredients ready to go. As soon as the round starts seat the first people then go to the kitchen and fill up all your ingredients! As you add them to recipes, refill right away even if it isn't needed.

Another general tip is when you are required to use one ingredient more than once, make that ingredient priority. If you have to add an ingredient before you add the "popular" one and that ingredient isn't used again, don't immediately begin preparing it, otherwise the ingredient you really need would be stuck in a queue. And when you are forced to use an ingredient in a 9-sec pot then get it ready in time for a 5-sec pot, make sure you don't have other ingredients in queue to be prepared.

I always take an order before I seat another customer. That way, I can have them comfortably spaced, so I can work at a paste. If I was presented with all these things to do, I would: Take an order, Deliver an order and then seat a customer.
