Gish

This is my most favourite indie game, I must say that almost everything in this game is perfect (The only problem is that this game works with OpenGL but to me it's not so important, How I'd wanna see the second part...

Greatest platformer for the PC

Wow, I never thought I would see this game here.

This is, without a doubt, one of the greatest platformers ever made for the PC. The platforming genre has grown rather stale, but this game takes it, and adds an amazing physics system, thus creating one of the most innovative and unique gaming experience in years.

This is going to sound pretty crazy, but in this game, you control a black blob of tar. It's able to squish itself and such, allowing you to squeeze through small spaces, it's also capable of clinging to walls, allowing you to crawl up surfaces and even along cielings, and it's also able to go into a "heavy" mode, allowing it to crush enemies and other obstacles.

It's very hard to explain what makes this game so great, really the only way to understand it is to play it, it's definetly worth the download, so I recomend you do. What I can say though, the graphics are great, the music is also very well composed, and the level design is top notch. Mixed with some HIGHLY creative physics puzzles, it's even better.

Oh, and before I wrap up, I should mention the multiplayer mode. If you have someone to play with, it has a multiplayer mode for two people using the same PC, it has some pretty crazy modes, from ordinary deathmatch to a rather odd football match. Makes for a greatparty game!

Anyway, if I havn't got the message accross yet, this game is a MUST, at least download it and try it out, I assure you you'll end up wanting to purchase it. This is probably one of, if not the greatest game currently on reflexive.

GISH

Gish is probably thebest game of 2006 The use of physics is phenomenal, and from this point on I expect all platformers to incorporate realistic physics.

In Gish, you play a ball of tar. He's a unique fellow who has the power to make his body sticky, slimy, and/or heavier. He can jump, but only if he is compacted or squished. Half of the learning curve is finding out the best way to squish him on the ground for a higher jump. Since the game is physics based, there are many things you can do. You can throw blocks up in the air, you can stomp on enemies or blocks, you can press switches, ride a mine-cart, ride a slingshot, travel via wrecking ball, manipulate moving walls, ramps, etc. Physics junkies will notice in the later levels that you can even ride a chaos movement machine (which is completely and totally unpredictable for the short time you ride it). The game reminds me of a physics based program we used in our physics classes at college. Except fun.

The combat in Gish is unique, but a little bizarre. Gish is not equipped with a standard punch, kick, or attack button. Usually, Gish can stomp on his enemies, but when the enemies have a height advantage, they gain the upper hand rather quickly. Gish can throw those enemies into a wall or out of the area, but it takes practice. The artwork is great, but the animation is lacking. I know that the artist could have at least animated some cutscenes or incorporated a death sequence for the little tarball. The game does have great music, but it stops after a level with no transitions and begins again on the next. It sounds very amateurish.

Finally, just because Gish is like nothing you've played before doesn't mean that it's the greatest game. It's original but very slow paced, and takes patience.

Warp Zones: (Cool hidden retro-themed levels!)
Level 1-3 Bash through the 1st set of spikes to the left of the 1st suspended platform fall down the passage and break the Question mark block to warp to the Mario-like level.

Level 2-1 pull the 1st vertical platform to the left, climb the ceiling and drop down using heavy to break through the ground fall down the passage and into a room with a giant pitfall Harry sprite to warp to the Pitfall-like level

Level 3-4 in the room where the skulls fly out of the ground run and grab onto the 1st skull platform that shoots out, ride it up into the air till you see a platform marked 666, jump to that platform to warp to the isle of the dead.

Level 4-4 right before the collapsing pillars climb under the 1st overhang and break through the wall, fall down the passage and into pacmans mouth to warp to the Pac-Man-like level.

Jumping can be hard at first, however with practice it becomes second nature. As you will probably notice, pressing "space" will make gish, well, not do much really. However, if you mix space with the up arrow, he will rise of the ground a bit, now at the top of his little jump, press and hold down to hit the ground with force. Gish will compress once he hits the ground, now press space and up again, and due to his compression he'll jump higher! Do this a few times and you'll notice Gish will start to gain some height, and thats how you jump :)

So, just to make sure you understand, press up and space to jump, then hold down once he stops rising, and when he hits the ground again press up and space once more, keep repeating for more height!

Happy jumping :P

I highly recommend using a game pad to play Gish. Jumping and everything else feels much more natural and intuitive with a game pad. A couple of game pads also make the vs. modes a whole lot more fun, you can even play four players on the same computer. Gish really feels like it was meant to be played with game pad.

High-speed wall climbing:
When you have to climb a wall or quickly sweep across roped bridges or poles sticking out of lava, quickly tap the A key for the stickyness while holding forward and up keys. That way you get the perfect amount of grip and weight, all that its needed for speed.

if you are falling from a ledge or other high place its advised to get heavy that way when you hit the floor you wont get squished.
