Deja vu

This game is a great take from the classic tower defense games found in custom maps for Warcraft 3 and various other strategy games. The brilliance in it is that it takes what can be a very complex type of game and simplifies it down to a level that almost anyone would be able to understand and play without reducing it so much that vital aspects are left out.

Basically for people wondering to download it or not, the game gives you money to buy "towers" and upgrades which will help prevent bugs from getting to a garden as they make their way through a given path. It requires smart placement and choice of your "towers", as well as fast decisions because you can also move your "towers" in the middle of a wave even after you have placed them.

It is great for people who want a challenge as well as people who like a fast moving game. Myself, a experienced tower defense player playing the game on the hardest difficulty am finding it to be relatively challenging, while from an earlier review someone claims to have passed the entire game within 2 hours; so if you are the type of person who likes playing on easy and speeding through games it will also suit your needs.

If you have never played anything like this I recommend downloading it as it is defiantly worth trying.

Great Game

This game is one of the best games from Reflexive I have played since The Great Tree.

This game is similar to Master Of Defense. The main idea of this game is to place garden defenses (gnomes, plants, flamingos, etc.) to prevent bugs and pests from getting to your flowers. You may think this is an easy task, well think again! Some bugs fly, some crawl, some bugs are faster than others. It's total chaos out there!

To add to the excitement of Story Mode, there is a Challenge Mode where you complete levels based on certain rules, such as "Complete this level using only Gnomes and nothing else" This creates a fun diversion if you need a break from Story Mode.

Overall this game is great!
I would definitely recommend this game to any Reflexive Gamer.

A sparkling example of the Tower Defense genre

I have played many Tower Defense games, but Garden Defense is easily one of the more enjoyable TDs out there.

The objective of the game is to destroy waves of bugs (land based and flying) using a selection of ornaments, plants and even your own insects. Towers (well, gnomes, cacti and so on) each have a different role to play, and all upgrade extensively.

So why is this Tower Defense better than others? Firstly, the balance is very finely tuned. Rather than exponential wave strength increase, GD takes a far more sensible linear pacing. This leads to close-fought battles to desperately take down escaping bugs, and the fair balance allows multiple solutions to each level.

The game has only 3 static defences. Plants grow stronger over time (but require fertilizing to speed things up) and are also self-perpetuating: you are given a free juvenile plant in the form of a bud once one plant is "maxed out".

Ornaments, on the other hand, can be moved (although they need time to set up again) to chase down bugs that have slipped through the net. They do not grow over time, but you can upgrade them more than once per wave.

The final type of defence is your own bugs, purchased at a small cost and sent backwards around the path to engage other insects. They can be surprisingly destructive and are an interesting option.

I have several niggles - my main one being that Sunflowers and Gnomes are sickeningly overpowered. As a single player game, this can be ignored until difficulty (a.k.a Centipedes) forces your hand into using them. Additionally, the game's upgrading system causes duplication of roles - Cacti and Nightbells (and Cherubs and Flamingoes) both upgrade to hit both ground and air, becoming near-identical in function.

That said, killing insects with pelted seeds, spines, rockets, poison or Cherub... water is just plain fun, and the squishy pulp of dead insects will bring tears of joy to your eyes. Give this one a go... just don't hold your breath for

I disagree a bit with boris' tip, I find that placing a nightbell if the first wave is ground-only works much better than a sunflower. Then, when an aerial wave comes I plant a cactus. Works great.

The simplest way to play this game is to play once through on Easy, which will give you enough points to buy everything in the lab, and then to play on Hard for the badges. Some levels require some trial and error. For example, Museum 3 is best played with no plants at all and only gnomes for gadgets, which at first seems like an odd strategy. The dreaded centipedes are best fought with super gnomes and flying stinkbugs.

sunflowers are weaker then the cactus and the other flower... igf you got as far that you can use flowers only buy flowers
altough gatgets may be sheaper but also weaker
also if you evolve the cactus to 2th part they hit air and ground like all the flowers

for the first easy wave, a good spot for the cherub and flamingo does the trick for me, its enough to pass thru the first 5 waves to earn money.

  • Sunflowers and genome are very strong at high level but bad at low level. The good things in the first level is to place cherub, flamingo, nightbell, and cactus first.
  • All the genome, plants, and bugs upgrade that are brought from the lab can attack both flyer and crawler
  • Try to combine the attacker and slower together for more damage
  • Stinkbug are good in fighting with Armored bettle and millipede. They can fought over for a long time
  • Stinkbug's poison cloud hurts both flyer and crawler
