Awesome breakout experience!

I have just finished Funkiball Adventure and I have to say that this is one of the best breakout games I have ever played! Once you get the hang of the smash and super-smash features, you will wish you had it in all breakout games. And the story lured me in, too! It is both creative and funny with a great twist near the end! Now I have to go back and get all 5 stars on the levels that I missed..work will just have to wait!

Nice

Funkiball's gameplay is sweet. Pressing the mouse button will pull back on the paddle, letting you whack the ball, something I've yet to see in any other breakout-type game. It also features some scrollable levels, in which new bricks scroll down from the top of the screen. Super Breakout had a feature like this, which they called progressive mode. Nice to see that concept being brought back.

Solid and Polished

This is a damn fine brick buster, possibly the best I've played. It brings together many gameplay features seen in isolation in single games all together, and adds a bunch of important new ones. Everybody's already mentioned smashing the ball, but there's also some levels that are bigger than the screen. You destroy all the bricks on one level, and a bunch more scroll in, continuing the level with your powerups intact. This leads to some really high-powered gameplay by the time you reach the top of the level.

There are also levels where the bricks come down slowly over time, and it's a race to destroy them faster than they come down. It's like upside down tetris (particularly because this game allows bricks shaped like tetris pieces).

The graphical style is classic 2d with a few 3d touches such as bevels on the bricks, and soforth. Since I've always been a fan of retro and classic, I found this visually appealing. The brick destruction effects are among the prettiest I've seen, though I would've liked to see more spin from the little chunks as they faded away. (Hope to see that in a sequel.) The ball does motion blur at high speeds which makes it easier to track when it's really moving, and particles abound for a variety of effects.

Music is themed for each of the 10 worlds and then a different theme for title screen and for the bonus levels. Within each theme, the music varies based on the power level of your paddle, which means excitement can build up as you play. Between that and the number of overall themes, there's quite a bit of musical variety for a game with this small of a download. However that's all there is for interactivity. Hopefully we'll hear musical flourishes for specific ingame events in a sequel.

Gameplay is where the game really shines-- there are moving bricks, hundreds of possible properties on bricks (often used in combinations), over a dozen different materials including stone, wood, metal, glass, chains, and more traditional brightly colored bricks. Bricks come in a variety of shapes, including tetris type shapes, squares, rectangles, circles, a variety of triangles, and hexagons. Levels were almost entirely visually appealing and every level introduced something new in gameplay. There were no filler levels in this game.

In addition, there's plenty of replay value offered by the various difficulty levels. I like my games hard, and the gamer level satisfies-- if you want five stars on a level at gamer, it takes serious concentration, planning, and reflexes. The kid level is trivial, and should be good for children and people not used to games. The casual level strikes a nice balance and is where most people should start.

I had particular fun with the lightning ball-- this is a ball that emits sparks that jump from brick to brick, causing massive damage. Another fun one was the beach ball, which can be combined with a breakthru ball to make this giant spikey beachball of doom. There were at least four levels that had this amusing combination.

I really enjoyed the game and recommend you give it a look. But make sure you have an hour to spare-- it's horribly addictive, and I've not yet heard of any of my friends playing it without immediately using up the entire demo time in one sitting.

Tips & Tricks for 'Funkiball Adventure':

All the "Secrets" are in the bricks of each level, and you can break them free, except the last level. In this level, if you want to find the secret, you must not kill the "evil" paddle, until you reach the point where there are two indestructible orange bricks on the left and right. There, wait until the "evil" paddle breaks the left one, where the secret is. It's not very easy to keep it alive, as your paddle grows stronger. The trick is to grab the "power-downs" that it throws to you, so your strength is reduced. Or try losing a life every 10-20 shots, so your paddle's strength is reseted.
