Old school RPG at its best!

When I saw this, I was intrigued. It's the first time I saw a game with a file size of 100 mb in Reflexive. I downloaded it and tried it out. For the next 60 minutes, I was totally hooked. The graphics were great, the storyline was well-designed, and the sound was pretty good. The gameplay overall was really great. Hope Reflexive could come up with more games like this!

Eschalon... Close the book now.

As a lover of old school style RPG's, I really wanted to love this game, but unfortuantely it falls flat on its face in many areas.

On first look, this game remined me of the early Ultima series. This game certainly has potential, but some pretty big flaws drag its score down. Firstly the graphics. They're distinctly average for a game like this. Pixelated around the edges and defiantely late 80's rpg style.

Second, the complete lack of tutorial, which missed such vital information such as 'If you don't have at least 1 point in cartography, you can't use the minimap'.

Thirdly, and most annoyingly is the slowness of gameplay. It took literally 15 minutes real time to walk from the start point to the first village. And no that wasn't lag, my computer is only a year old. I barely got anywhere in the hours trial. Not to mention its 1000 exp to get your character to lv2, and monster killing only netted 8exp a time.

Forthly is the skills system. As mentioned before with no points in cartography, theres no minimap. But, not having points in certain skills gives major penalties too. No armour skill? You'll walk even slower and not hit as often. No sheild skill? Your block rate is dismal.

This game could have been great, but slow gameplay really lets it down. With graphics and sounds being nothing special, and the skills system letting it down by trying overly hard to be realistic it becomes nothing but an average game that will distract you for a while.

Defiantely not recomended to people without endless hours of time to invest in a game.

Eschalon: Book 1

I am a die-hard RPG fan. This game is amazing for just 100mb, considering some other short 'n sweet games with only 20-40mb less. The graphics are beautiful. The focus was on the world and objects. Graphics for the text scripts were simple. There is a cool mixture of 2D and 3D, which I've always liked. It would be too distracting to have sparkly, animated graphics to read the text in a text adventure. This is a perfect combination of a text adventure, point and click adventure and RPG. Sound is good, background music remains pleasant throughout the gameplay, realistic sfx, and the ability to toggle volume of each. Good storyline, plenty to explore (and find), good gameplay. The only downfall is what another reviewer mentioned: holding down the mouse button as the character walks the direction you point him. I didn't mind, just lightly press the mouse. An alternative would be a toggle between mouse and arrow button controls available during gameplay. Overall an excellent game.
