Not a bad game, time for some background

Guys, you can't really attack this game for "ripping" off raptor, it's by the same developers. This game was produced after Raptor, and is the first game in the "demonstar" series.

blaming it for looking like a 10 year old game is probably rather redundant as well, it is a 10 year old game. When it originally came out the graphics were acctually very good, and they hold up rather well. This is the first time i've seen this game on a site other then the developers, so hopefully they'll also be releasing the two sequals here, which do look better and are more challenging.

Thats an important point too, these games are not about eyecandy (although the sequals look very nice), it's about the challenge. Crank up the difficulty and play it for more then 10 minutes, this game is hard. Also, it's one of few proper arcade style scrolling shooters on reflexive. Graphcis aside, the amjority of these style of games arn't done overly well, they miss the intensity that this genre is known for. However demonstar hits that, and older gamers will notice, if you loved the scrolling shooters from the arcades, this should bring back memories, I recomend you give it a go.

Another great feature is the multiplayer, it's got a proper coop mode, again just like these games used to be in the arcades. Here's a tip, play with two players, but make the controls on both ships the same, then press the ships up against the side of the screen to put em back to back, and you'll have double fire power, as well as extra enemies to take down due to being in coop mode.

Well, thats about it, give this game a shot, it's not a rip of raptor, it's by the same developers. Some reviewers say the demonstar series is the best of this genre on PC, I'd tend to agree, especially for those up for a challenge. The graphics arn't up to todays standards, but the games 10 years old, I'm sure you can cut it some slack. Here's hoping for the rest of the series!

How do I say this..

Demonstar: NOW IN FULL SCREEN! I remember owning this game, I can't remember how I came across it, but it ran in this tiny window. They could have just released somekind of patch, but then again, who hasn't thrown this away once already...

Aside from being made into full screen, the sound is still compressed in the same way it used to be back when they released this game in 1998. That's hardly the meaning of "classic", as nothing's been re-mastered. Surely somewhere between 1998 and today, Mountain King would have had the time to get some work done in the last 10 years?

This kind of reminds me of this video of the guy who tries to rob a convenience store, fails, then comes back to the store later with a bag over his head, but is still wearing the same shirt.

Why not Galactix 2? I'd play that.

Full Package?

Well, another retro shooter, and a good thing, we've all just about tired of jets'n'guns. The problem is, we'll alll tire quickly from this game, not neccecarily from the game being poorly, which is up to each separate individuual, but more to the fact that we're left with the aching impression of this game not being finished yet.

Sounds are good, that's a plus part of the game. They're not great, and the music is very midi-ish, but this is, after all a retro game, so it all fits in. Whether Retro means "We want to take you back to the supernintendo" or "We don't have anything new to bring to the gaming world, but we want money." is once again, hard to tell.

Graphics are also good, nothing flashy, nothing grand, but what graphics there are is smooth, decent, and there's no holes in the picture.

As for the game itself, it brings nothing new to the genre, or even atempt at a cross-species game, but it holds true to the classics, and, albeit its many faults, it should please at least the hard core fans. Though the casual gamer, and the picky gamer alike, will run from this game, because of the few faults.
Options. This part of the game is truly undone, if not for the choice between keeyboard and mouse control, there'd be no interaction options at all. Not in-game volume control, no input sensory adjustments, no nothing.
Replayability. The game follows a linear play, so once you hit that big finish, there's really nothing else to do but to attempt increasing your highscore. And that's it.

High marks for staying true to the classics, minus points for not bringing anything to the classics, and minus points for the lack of options. 25.

Tips & Tricks for 'DemonStar Classic':

If I remember correctly, you can map the 1 and 2 player controls to be the same. When the game starts, mash your ships together on the left or right side of the screen. The ships will be overlapping and you'll have double the firepower. And don't map the "smart bomb" to the same key, that way you'll have double the amount of that as well.
